N.A.S.A. vs. Max Romeo’s »Chase the Devil«

posted on August 14th, 2010 by Tobias in Free Download, Video of the Week

While today, Nikes and Clarks often are international rudeboys’ footwear of choice, especially in the 70s and 80s, many Reggae, Punk and Ska aficionados skanked in Doc Martens boots. Actually, many Punks and Ska people rock »Docs« up until today.

The brand turns 50 this year and asked 10 artists to deliver 10 exclusive tracks for that more or less special occasion. 7 of them have been put out so far.

The latest 50 years of Dr. Martens release is N.A.S.A. covering Max Romeo’s and The Upsetter’s classic »Chase the Devil«:

After hours spent crunching real tape loops and experimenting with the dubbing to get exactly the right »stoned, spacey feel«, the production on the track sparkles (via Dr. Martens).

Even more than the track itself, I enjoy the clip to it which was directed by none other than Don Letts:

It was an interesting project as I’d never done animation before and I felt like challenge. I’m usually very »hands on« my projects but with this it was a case of »hands off« and »heads on«. In other words I had to convey what was in my mind to the animators and let them do their thing (via Dr. Martens).

Read the whole interview with Letts over on the Dr. Martens site (where you also find some behind the scenes studio footage with N.A.S.A.), watch the clip above and download the track below.

seen. on Spoek Mathambo and Gnucci Banana

posted on August 13th, 2010 by Tobias in Fashion, Munich, seen. on

Recently, Spoek Mathambo (cover star of Fader Magazine #69) and Gnucci Banana were in town to shoot the video for »Hush (iggy iggy)« – one of the tunes that will be on Tim Turbo’s »Hush (iggy iggy) / Linyora« EP which will be released later this year.

Gabe passed by the set and took some nice shots of them on top of the roof of »Puerto Giesing« – a former shopping centre which has been turned into a sub-cultural hotspot earlier this year.

Thanks, Jakob, for setting this up and thanks, Spoek and Gnucci, for taking the time and looking good in our shirtsWords, Power & Sound« / »Venom«)!

Can’t wait to seen the video!

Peter Dean Rickards – new portfolio site

posted on August 12th, 2010 by Tobias in Jamaican Style, Photography, seen.

Today, photographer, writer and filmmaker Peter Dean Rickards has launched his new portfolio site.

For more than one decade now, Rickards has been showing the world that Jamaica can look quite different than what we are used to from cheesy postcards, poor reggae album sleeves or cluttered Appleton night life guides – just by having a different look at it.

He has always been a major visual influence for seen. – from the days when we hunted down the first issues of FIRST in dodgy Kingston fashion stores and uptown rum bars to those when I drove from Mona Campus to Barbican or Stony Hill everyday after UWI classes to work with him on projects like The Afflicted Yard – Kingston 2002-2006 or reduxed versions of FIRST magazines.

On his new site, Rickards finally makes most of his work easily accessible.

His pictures have been published by magazines and newspapers all around the globe and I still hope that one day a publisher will do Rickards’ portfolio justice and release a mad decent coffee table book with his photographs.

seen. on Sir Nenis (Sharkslayer / Top Billin)

posted on August 11th, 2010 by Tobias in seen. on

The mighty mighty Sharkslayer (Top Billin) are currently touring Australia and Sir Nenis was kind enough to send us a picture that shows him wearing out our »Words, Power and Sound« t-shirt.

Funny thing is that the other guy you see on the photo, Douster, like Nenis, Konshens or Nas, got caught wearing the same shirt already, too.

To all you supporters: Thanks a lot for reppin’ our stuff out there! Keep nicing things up as we like to do! One!
