In the lead-up to this year’s edition of »Culture Clash« in New York city, Red Bull Music Academy asked reggae writers Eddie Stats, David Katz, Rishi Nath and Paul Bradshaw to weigh in with their pick for the best sound system of all-time in a series of articles they called »System Clash«.

Stats chose Stone Love for the musical variety they played, them pioneering the art of juggling, revolutionizing the dub plate game, their clean sound and them being the first truly global soundsystem:

By the end of the ’90s, Stone Love had franchises in New York and London as well, solidifying their supremacy and making them the only sound that could play three different dances in three different cities – on three different continents.

Katz picked Jah Shaka for their sound manipulation skills, their consequent focus on positive sounds of actual importance as well as the spiritual vibes in their sessions:

A Jah Shaka session really is akin to a religious experience; even those who claim not to be religious themselves will often report feeling something spiritual there.

Nath went with Massive B for their massive radio presence, their high-quality promotion, their record label and their consistent and longstanding connection to the dancehall community:

You can’t just think of Massive B doing good things for New York. You have to think in another way: being from New York, look what they’ve done. Try to imagine reggae without Massive B? You can’t.

Finally, Bradshaw repped for Sir Coxsone Outernational for him recognising the value of youth and the need for fresh ideas within his team, him maintaining long-standing links with Jamaica’s finest producers and artists and his sound boasting an unrivalled selection of music:

Lloyd possessed a gravitas that was commensurate to the Knighthood he had bestowed upon himself.

You can read all articles clicking on the links at the beginning of each paragraph above. Enjoy!

Major Lazer’s second album »Free the Universe« hit the iTunes store today. So far, my favourite tunes besides the singles that had been released upfront, are »Jessica« featuring Ezra Koenig, »Keep Cool« featuring Shaggy, and »Playground« featuring Bugle.

However, the latest video for the album is for »Watch Out For This (Bumaye)« featuring Busy Signal. The Jay Will production pays tribute to the styles and aesthetics of the 90’s dancehall era:

The team even went so far to bring on Earl “Biggy” Turner, the noted designer behind some of the era’s most memorable fashions (for Shabba, etc.), as a consultant. (via LargeUp)

Watch the video above, pass by the Major Lazer pop-up shop at Miss Lily’s if you are in NYC, and check the Major Lazer website for upcoming tour dates.

[...] Contender was not the be all end all, so we’re thankful that this Mayhem series started after that also to keep us busy, keep us getting fights, building our record, mastering our skills, so that when we do get on the big stage, the international stage, we’ll be ready and we’re going to bring those belts and titles back to Jamaica.

Ever since WILDLIFE! told us that he would be working on a release »clashing Jamaican artistes and british Punk rockers together« in an interview back in late 2010, I had been anxious for it to hit the streets.

One week ago, that time had finally come and »Roxy Reboot« was well worth the wait.

WILDLIFE! managed to track down Knox (The Vibrators), TV Smith (The Adverts), Charlie Harper (UK Subs), Duncan Reid & Honest John Plain (The Boys) – all legendary figures from the UK’s first punk rock movement to reinterpret their favourite reggae classics. Simultaneously, he collaborated with Ward 21, Natalie Storm, Serocee and Terry Lynn who reinterpret some influential punk classics.

The result is a 2013 version of what it sounded like when punk rock and reggae met in London 35 years ago and it’s as original, raw, and powerful as it gets. You can feel the passion only very personal projects carry in every single of the eight tunes on »Roxy Reboot« – my personal favourites being »Kingdom Rise Kingdom Fall« and »Pissheadsville«.

Go get your hands on this modern classic now – if you’re quick you might even be one of the lucky 300 owners of the limited vinyl edition designed by Mettler Mettler & Mettler.
