»Keep On Running« – The Story of Island Records

posted on August 23rd, 2010 by Tobias in Design, Jamaican Music, Video

Looks like 2010 is the year some of the most-influential international labels in the history of reggae are putting out their memoirs in book-form.

After Greensleeves collaborated with Al Fingers and Stüssy to drop »The First 100 Covers« recently, Rizzoli Books now announced the release of »Keep On Running« – The Story of Island Records.

Of equal appeal to music nerds and esthetes alike, the U.S. release of »Keep On Running« – The Story of Island Records is a collection of album art and photographs telling the story of founder Chris Blackwell’s enormous role in introducing Jamaican reggae and other fringe music to the world. The book will be out in September.

In the meantime, make sure to watch »Do it Yourself – The Story of Rough Trade« – a nice documentary about another formative indie record label that helped making reggae music available to the world.

Support GABE on Threadless!

posted on August 21st, 2010 by Tobias in GABE

Our graphics boss GABE is on a killing spree right now: after a comic book he contributed to won the most renowned award for graphic novels in Germany and some of the seen. shirts he designed got picked for Typoshirt One – a book showcasing great typographical t-shirt designs, his photographic work can currently be seen in Riddim magazine (even though they basically raped some of the pictures with the layout). Also, Stüssy (!) just licensed two of his shirt designs for an upcoming collection.

Show the man some respect and support him – the easiest way to to that is currently to vote for »The Wisdom Lies in the Past« (see above), an artwork that he submitted to Threadless.

Major Lazer moves from music to Cartoon Network

posted on July 9th, 2010 by Tobias in Design, Jamaican Artists

Yesterday, The Jamaica Star unveiled details of the Major Lazer show which is about to hit Cartoon Network early next year.

According to Diplo,

the show is gonna be very weird, kinda out there and really funny. A crazy world of 80s vampires and zombies via Jamaica. The show is mainly in English and patois, the accent might be heavy so we might have to use sub-titles.

This comes as part of the concept is that Jamaican deejays voice the characters. E.g. Future Troubles a.k.a. Future Fambo lately auditioned for the role of the main character:

I was approached to do it, the Major Lazer character you know drinks hard, smoke hard, parties hard, he’s like an outlaw and the character fit Future Fambo,

he told The Star. Sounds like something to look forward to.

The Major Lazer Show will be the latest addition to the portfolio of »Adult Swim« – e.g. resonsible for shows like »American Dad« or »Family Guy«.

Stüssy Deluxe X Greensleeves X Al Fingers

posted on June 20th, 2010 by Tobias in Audio, Design

Often enoughed have I raged about big brands just not getting it right when dealing with Jamaican culture. The happier I am to see what Stüssy Deluxe has done together Grensleeves Records and Al Fingers:

After almost two years, a collaboration between Stüssy Deluxe, Greensleeves Records and myself has finally come out. The project began in summer 2008 when Stussy’s head designer Nick Bower asked me to put together a mixtape for Stüssy Deluxe. I went to Greensleeves Records for the music, and the project then grew to include a book on Greensleeves album cover art (»Greensleeves The First 100 Covers«) and a small clothing collection of nine Stüssy Deluxe tees, with prints featuring elements of the album cover art.

Especially the book is a must-buy:

The book is a document of the first 100 Greensleeves album covers. It also contains interviews with Greensleeves’ founders, Chris Sedgwick and Chris Cracknell, and its chief designer, Tony McDermott, who has worked for Greensleeves almost since the day the label launched in 1977.

And while the release was announced early May already, it is now finally available in selected stores all over the world.
